Lymphedema surgery research is an emerging field that needs to be done to document the prevalence of lymphedema and to help understand its pathology. We also need to do research on ways of preventing this problem and on developing effective treatment options when lymphedema occurs.

The Fellowship starts yearly the 3 rd week of September and runs until the 2 nd week of June, exceptionally it could be extended for 6 weeks more. This working period is divided in two main areas:

  • Participating in ongoing basic and clinical research or developing some new research projects.
  • Following an educational program on lymphedema surgical training for qualified plastic surgeons with microsurgical experience. This training opportunity will provide experience with a broad spectrum of clinical cases, emphasizing the planning and execution of microsurgical solutions for lymphatic disorders. The operative experience can be tailored to meet specific needs/interests of the fellow.

The purpose of this fellowship is to develop a basic science, translational or clinical reseach project in the area of lymphedema / lymphatic dysfunction. The BLRF also links with other international researchers to conduct joint projects.

Fellow is expected to publish at least two articles in a peer-reviewed journal during the fellowship training program.

Candidates for the Fellowship Program must have completed plastic surgery training in an approved program in the European Union or have had comparable training and experience in foreign hospitals.

Applications should be requested 9 – 12 months prior to the start of the fellowship. Must be able to license through College of Physicians of Barcelona. Prior experience in microsurgery preferable and experience in clinical research desirable.
